I WAKE UP…

usually with a cuddle in bed with my youngest son, followed by an invasion of cats and our dog vying for attention and demanding breakfast. Otherwise, it’s an early start and a sea swim. I’m lucky to live so near the water – it’s a refreshing start to any day.

WORK STARTS…

once the children are at school, it’s only then I can focus on the tasks at hand. Since home working became the norm, I’ve noticed that setting boundaries between home and work life are crucial for wellbeing and productivity. It’s an active rather than a passive process that usually begins with the best intentions and a cup of tea.

A TYPICAL DAY…

consists of starting with realistic goal setting – I write a short and achievable list for the day. Seeing clients is, of course, the priority, and after each session, I spend time going over my notes and managing any admin involved. Beyond that, my days vary; writing new scripts, research, recording, planning, study, or writing posts and mini-blogs for social media. Each day is interspersed with walking my crazy springer Ginny, meditations, and finally meeting the children when they finish school.

HOW I GOT INVOLVED IN HYPNOTHERAPY…

It’s been a long journey. I was accepted to the Edinburgh College of Art at 17 to study fine art. While studying, my mental health deteriorated. Of course, if I knew then what I know now, the situation may have been very different! But this was the catalyst that triggered my interest in mental health treatment and awareness. After graduating, I worked in schools. I had a hankering to do something more, but my anxiety was terrible and my confidence low. After taking small, practical steps towards improving my mental health and working in relevant volunteering roles, I applied to study counselling. After 15 months, I turned my attention to solution-focused clinical hypnotherapy,
and all of the final and missing pieces of my own mental health jigsaw fell into place. Feeling as well as
I had been in 15 years, I began a new role. One that
will help and educate as many people as possible – about how they can learn to listen to their bodies and manage their mental health. I always say, ‘Everything you need is already with you’ – it’s at the very foundation of what I do.

BEST PART OF THE JOB…

There’s a point in a client’s progress when something changes. It’s perhaps a combination of trust, them relaxing into the process, or allowing themselves to really accept, really believe that together, we can improve things for them. They have begun to feel that things are possible again. They have hope. That is easily the best part.

AND THE WORST…

The admin! Does everyone say that? I’m dyslexic, which I love to tell people as it helps them acknowledge that things are possible, even with such diversities. We need to be flexible and curious about making it happen, which is how I approach admin!

CAREER HIGHLIGHT…

There have been incremental highlights – little sparklers rather than one big bang. My little sparklers happen whenever I learn something relevant, helpful and new, aligned with my modality that I know will help someone. I can ‘see’ how it fits in and will be beneficial.

AFTER HOURS…

You’ll find me cooried on the couch with the kids and my lovely husband, probably reading, listening to music or watching a show on the telly. It’s the easiest way to bring us all together at the moment, although we often spend as long debating the programme as we do watching it! If I’m not in the house, then I’ll be out with friends. I’m blessed to have a small group of great friends, and I love spending time with them. There’s nothing like that day when you finally manage to align your schedules, meet up. It makes me smile just imagining it.

IN TEN YEARS’ TIME…

Ooh, I love stating positive intentions! I’ll be running and enjoying multiple successful clinics and easily maintaining the balance between work and home.
I’ll have developed helpful mindfulness and relaxation programmes that work in groups to help as many folks as possible. My family will be happy and healthy, and
I’ll feel generally joyful and proud as punch!
