James and Elinor Logan live and farm at Athelstaneford Mains together with son Hamish (24) and Anna (22). The Veg Shed evolved when Elinor closed her shoe shop and looked for a diversification idea for the farm. The result was purchasing a vending machine to sell their home-grown potatoes direct to the consumer. As with all great ideas, the concept grew and The Veg Shed now sells potatoes online and delivers all over the UK.

A TYPICAL DAY…
The machine is filled by all the family depending on who is passing. During lockdown we have been filling the machine about four to five times a day due to the high demand. It has been brilliant to have so many people buying local and supporting the great Scottish produce we sell.

HOW WE GOT INVOLVED IN FARMING…
The Logan family has been farming at Athelstaneford Mains since 1931 when they moved from Ayrshire. James is currently the third generation farming with his father Willie, Elinor and Hamish. We farm OSR, spring barley for malting, wheat for distilling and potatoes.

BEST PART OF THE JOB IS…
We speak to so many people
whilst stocking the vending machine. It’s so good to hear everyone’s stories; where they have come from and how much they enjoy visiting and purchasing food from our quirky machine.
AND THE WORST…
There’s not really a worst part, as we find speaking to our customers and being outside really rewarding. There aren’t many negatives unless the typical Scottish weather is against us when there are jobs to be done – very frustrating!

HOW WE KEPT BUSY IN LOCKDOWN…
We managed to find time, in between keeping the vending machine stocked, to develop our website. Allowing customers to order potatoes online and get them delivered direct to their door. It’s been a huge success and our potatoes are now delivered all over the UK. We hope to develop the website further by offering veg boxes and seed potatoes.

IN TEN YEAR’S TIME…
We hope customers will still continue to buy locally, supporting local businesses, and we’ll be selling our locally sourced produce to everyone. We’ll be ensuring the best Scottish produce is sourced with minimal food miles and is readily available for our customers. The next Logan generation (Hamish and Anna) are following social media trends and keeping The Veg Shed up-to-date.
