Long before Blue Planet II, Phantassie Organic Market Garden had an emphasis on low food miles, minimal packaging, local partnerships and local jobs. And now they’ve teamed up with Lil offering customers even more choice.

Phantassie Organic Market Garden has been delivering sustainably-produced, seasonal fresh vegetables and fruit to homes in Edinburgh and the Lothians for more than 20 years from its very fertile patch in sunny East Lothian. There is an emphasis on low food miles, minimal packaging, local partnerships and local jobs. “It’s all things that are again at the forefront of people’s minds as we wrestle to cope with climate change, pollution, biodiversity and supporting local businesses.” owner Patricia Stephen says.

But it’s not all about avoiding doom and gloom – their produce and service are so good they have generated a loyal customer base that in some cases stretches back through their 20 year journey. “We are keen to ‘stick to our knitting’, still growing and selling the best fruit and veg. Guy and his growing team have produced spicy peppers, tomatillos and juicy beans, and the more usual spinach, courgettes, leeks and kale. Yet we wanted more ways to provide even better service.

Phantassie have launched a Bespoke Box option. Customers can choose a box weekly, monthly or whenever suits, selecting produce from a weekly changing list. “It combines the benefits of being a regular who we know and talk to, with the convenience of an online supermarket shop but without the endless scrolling.” says Cindy Chapleo, Phantassie’s bespoke champion. “Our usual boxes continue for our customers who love the service, embrace the unpredictability and seasonal changes. Bespoke Boxes are for those who have dietary concerns, a reluctance to waste food, or maybe just need it for a party or big cook-up. The list is far more comprehensive than you will find in any supermarket organic section and the choice more flexible.

Phantassie has also developed a ground-breaking partnership with Lil, a local social enterprise promoting Lower Impact Living. Lil offers a curated range of plastic-free, sustainable products including pantry staples, household items, cleaning refills, toiletries, gifts and more. “We really like what Lil are doing and why; we thought they were a natural fit. Now you can order from Phantassie with Lil, and any Phantassie customers can get their Lil shop delivered free with their veg.

Lil director Louise Hastie says; “The wonderful delivery drivers at Phantassie will even take your containers away  and bring them back to us to refill for next time. It’s all the benefits of an urban refill or zero-waste store, but delivered to your door. We provide guilt-free shopping, without forsaking guilty pleasures like sun-dried mango, Steampunk coffee, Chocolate Tree hot chocolate, or go Marie Kondo with cleaning refills that spark joy, plus our beautiful soaps and toiletries, which are often made by local cottage industries.
