Having collected Scottish art for many years, Alan Rae decided to turn his interest into a business by opening Fidra Fine Art in his North Berwick home in 2012. After many successful years, the gallery moved to Gullane’s main street last year, where exhibitions of contemporary Scottish artists are complemented by work from some of the most influential Scottish names from the past hundred years or so. We caught up with Alan while he was taking a break from hanging his next exhibition.…
What is your greatest achievement?
Getting my wife, Rachel, to marry me was a big one!
What advice would you give to your 18-year-old self?
Must be a cliche by now but I would refer me to Baz Luhrmann’s “Everybody’s Free (to Wear Sunscreen)”.
When are you happiest?
On holiday in France with the family, beside the pool with a good book and a bottle of wine.
When was the last time you laughed out loud?
Last night watching Forrest Gump. I laughed… and cried… again!
What is the one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?
I’m slightly colour blind so please forgive any hanging blunders.
Too difficult to pick one as I like lots of different styles and genres. Scottish artists include Colquhoun and MacBryde, James McBey’s etchings, Bellany, John Houston. Outwith Scotland; Ben Nicolson, William Scott, Andrew Wyeth, Breugels up close are incredible, Schiele and Klimt’s drawings are beautiful things. I recently stumbled upon Spanish artist Antonio Lopez Garcia, well worth a look if you haven’t already. If you want one for the desert island though, I think either of Breugel’s “Tower of Babels” would keep me enthralled.
What word do you over use?
The kids, I’m sure will say, “No”.
Song that always gets you dancing?
Talking Heads “Road to Nowhere” would do the trick.
Putting on the next exhibition is always an adventure.
Finally, oil paintings or watercolours?
Oils but I do like a good drawing or etching.
