As with so many things, anything we can do the Scandinavians can do better…

…and their take on mulled wine, glögg, conjures up visions of cosy firesides and candlelit log cabins. In fact, at its best, nothing says winter like a steaming mug of spiced wine with its spicy scent of cloves, cinnamon and citrus. But, at its worst, it is sickly-sweet, acidic, inconsistent from batch to batch and often undrinkable. It was with this in mind that Gullane-based Julia Sutherland, tasked with serving mulled wine at her local playgroup’s Christmas Fayre decided to make a mulled wine mix that would not only taste delicious but could simply be added to wine, heated up and served.

After numerous attempts of trying different blends of various spices and juices, she eventually found a blend which passed her taste test and, more importantly, those at the Christmas Fayre! Following the success of her tipple, Julia was astounded to be asked year after year if she could make an easy mulled wine mix for people to enjoy at home. After two years of fulfilling these orders and boosted by the apparent demand, Julia decided to take the plunge and make a business of it. And in 2017, Gullane Glögg by Julia, was born.
