Pedal-powering into East Lothian is EZ-Riders, a new dedicated electric bike hire service offering a cleaner, greener way to get around the region.

Located on the outskirts of North Berwick, EZ-Riders operates a fleet of e-bikes from award-winning manufacturer Rad, each model tailor-made for touring the coastal roads and tackling off-road trails. Good for the body and the mind, cycling has seen a surge in popularity since the onset of the COVID pandemic. Statistics released last month by Cycling Scotland show 47 per cent more cycling journeys were recorded between 23 March 2020 and 22 March 2021 compared to the same period 2019-–2020 and the Bicycle Association reported that the value of the cycling market in 2020 was up 45% on the previous year to £2.31 billion. E-bike sales are predicted to triple by 2023.

Pedal-assisted power up to a speed of 15mph (the motor cuts out beyond that) with a range of 35-55+ miles on a single charge means cyclists can go further and see more on a Rad e-bike; travelling uphill or carrying a heavy load is no sweat. To help cyclists get the most out of their time in the saddle, EZ-Riders has mapped out a selection of routes that cover different distances and difficulty.

Set up by North Berwick residents Niall Middleton and Tina O’Rourke to offer locals and visitors a more sustainable and responsible way to travel. The pair said; “We literally put the miles in, trying out lots of different e-bikes before deciding on the best ones for the East Lothian terrain. What’s so appealing about cycling here is that the landscape is largely flat and there is so much to see from incredible beaches and five-star visitor attractions to glorious inland trails and historic towns. The bikes take on all the heavy lifting so you can sail along at a good speed but still feel like you’re getting a workout. The response so far has been absolutely brilliant. Even the dyed-in-the-wool cycling purists are converted when they try an e-bike.”

Michaela Sullivan, East Lothian Council’s Head of Service Development, added: “It’s fantastic to see new businesses starting up and we hope to see many more as we come out of the COVID-19 pandemic. East Lothian is welcoming visitors back and I’m sure a service like this will be popular not only with visitors but locals too. It also encourages environmentally-friendly travel, which is something East Lothian Council actively promotes.
