…you’re in for a big surprise! With its idyllic setting and laid-back vibe, you’ll find a café that serves up a sense of escapism alongside an array of delightful dishes.

Boardside Cafe at Foxlake in Dunbar is not your conventional café, it’s a quirky outdoor eaterie in a, quite frankly, beautiful setting. Picnic tables and deckchairs overlook the lake and the woodlands beyond or you can cosy up in the train carriage or ‘the shack’. Owner, Jacquie Gibson says “Don’t be put off coming should the Scottish weather be less than kind. We’ve plans to revamp our indoor seating in the railway carriage to ensure it’s more in keeping with our setting. And we can provide hot-water bottles and blankets in the shack to ensure customers enjoy their café goodies in comfort.

It’s not just wakeboarders and adrenaline-junkies who choose to eat here, Boardside Café is the ideal pit-stop if you’re walking the John Muir Way or just fancy an amble around Foxlake itself. It’s the perfect place to bring the dog, sit for a while and  indulge in a spot of people watching. And it’s not just the setting that is perfect, the menu emanates a careful, but laid-back vibe with food that relies on seasonal, good quality, local ingredients. Jacquie adds “It’s not enough to have a great location you’ve got to accompany it with incredible food. We’re passionate about how food tastes and where it comes from. Where we can, we use local producers, butchers, bakers and dairies.” Their new vibrant all-day menu offers something for everyone and throughout spring a new dish will be introduced every week. Delightful dishes such as breakfast rolls and smashed avocado on toast to milkshakes and lassis, from locally sourced steak burgers and Belhaven smoked salmon to veggie meze, tacos and sharing nachos. And the food is totally instagrammable! Beautifully presented on Boardside boxes lined with greaseproof paper, enamel plates and kilner jars. And, in line with their outdoor credentials, there is no single-use plastic only eco-friendly vegware.

Boardside Café is the perfect venue for special celebrations and the team cater for a range of events, including their Teddy Bears’ Picnics. Launching in May for a limited period, the picnics will run three times a day and customers are able to book a slot to host their very own teddy bears’ picnic. Guests follow a teddy bear trail around the lake before returning to ‘the shack’ where they’ll enjoy a picnic full of delightful goodies such as teddy bear shaped sandwiches and biscuits. There’s a host of activities for the youngsters to enjoy including a bubble machine and a photo booth for them and teddy! What’s more 10% of the cost is donated to SiMBA (Simpson’s Memory Box Appeal).
