There was a time when charity shops were just a hodge-podge of bric-a-brac, nylon and knitting patterns that no one bothered with. Not any more! Charity retailing takes on a whole new level of quality and style in Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland’s stores in East Lothian.

Something incredible is happening on the UK high street. According to a new report, 14 shops closed every day last year, yet some retailers managed, magically, to turn a profit. And one such type of retailer was the humble charity shop.

Charity shops weren’t considered particularly cool and unless you were a vintage obsessive compulsive prepared to rifle through the racks, they weren’t likely to yield too many gems. However in the last 10 years all that has changed, many charity shops are fashion-focused boutiques where you can find designer and vintage clothing. Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS) has been quick to follow this trend and their stores located in Haddington, North Berwick and Dunbar offer a wide selection of high-quality, fashionable clothing and accessories. Boasting a range of styles and brands to suit all tastes and with friendly and welcoming staff, these stores offer the ultimate customer experience.

Retail Manager Aimee Foster Boyd said “All items in the shops have been donated to CHSS and of course all the profits help fund vital services for local people living with chest, heart and stroke illness – all money raised in Scotland stays in Scotland.”

Of course, with increased demand for boutique-style charity shops comes increased demand for volunteers. And CHSS are hoping their stores will attract more volunteers who have a passion for fashion! They are looking for a range of people to support them with many interesting roles on offer. Aimee adds “We urgently need the support of volunteers to help us. There are lots of interesting roles on offer, from styling, merchandising and display, sorting donated stock, helping with admin and of course serving customers. We’re also looking for volunteer drivers to collect donated goods. At CHSS we are very flexible with volunteers’ time and can tailor your time to our volunteer roles. We appreciate how busy life can get and are happy to work around you. So if you could spare a few hours we’d love to hear from you.”
