“ Training is the lifeblood of any business ”
– Vidal Sassoon
In 1985 two young men met through their love of hairdressing. With exciting careers ahead of them, Nick Arrojo and Graeme Hamilton met at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in Manchester. Nick, now a top stylist and educator stayed with Sassoon for ten years before moving to the USA. Graeme also moved on. He and wife Jackie ran their highly successful first salon, building up to 18 staff, in Falkirk for over 22 years, and last year they opened Jack and Ivy in Dunbar.
The salon proved both successful and popular in a very short space of time. So quickly, in fact, that within 10 months of opening Jack and Ivy were announced as a finalist in the East and Mid Lothian Business Awards for ‘Best New Business of 2018’.
Both believe the secret of their success has been investing in both the business and their staff, and the numerous awards they won at their previous salon re-enforces this ethos. Jackie explains “We’ve been loyal to our staff and they’ve been loyal to us. The culture of Jack and Ivy is to nurture the talents of staff through training” Graeme added “Training is key. I was influenced by what I learned from the Vidal Sassoon group and that’s where we’ve been sending staff ever since.” Gabby who joined the salon last year has attended London Vidal Sassoon and new team member Holly will be going in October this year. Both Graeme and Jackie also continue to visit Vidal Sassoon every year and Jackie also achieved a colour specialist degree with L’Oréal.
Graeme’s come full circle since those days at Vidal Sassoon in the 80s. Whilst online training in the salon he discovered Nick teaching an online seminar on cutting. He was so inspired, that in May this year he and Jackie flew to New York and spent a few days at the Nick Arrojo Academy for hands-on training. Graeme explains; “The hairdressing industry is changing all the time, so we constantly train on new styles and techniques. We know a customer’s hair is important to them so we ensure our staff have the perfect blend of experience and talent ensuring a customer’s experience is second to none.”
It’s not just the staff who are nurtured at Jack and Ivy, as soon as you walk through the door you’ll be given warm welcome by the team and their salon dog Stan. What’s more everyone is dedicated to making sure you have the best experience with the best possible results.
