This month as we all start snuggling down for winter in Scotland, I thought I would breathe a little more sunshine your way and share with you my foodie adventure to Crete this year..

Nestled in the Amari Valley, is the village of Meronas, home to a small Taverna – Moexo Bonies – run by mother and daughter, Eleni and Vassiliki. This place is not only special because of its location and food, it’s the warmth and the smiles with which you’re greeted that makes you feel like one of the family. Amazing Cretan food is cooked in a rustic kitchen where I was fortunate to watch and photograph Vassiliki working her magic. We ate stuffed courgette flowers, local sausages, aubergine stew, green beans with slivers of garlic, local cheese and wine. And the reason it tasted so good? Everything is plucked from the garden and cooked there and then with immense love and passion. On our last visit we were presented with a little omelette. Simple and most probably the most delicious meal I’ve had in Crete. Eggs, infused with Greek basil and oregano, were then poured over scorched aubergine, peppers, red and white onions, yellow and green courgettes and tomatoes. Then served with bread from the oven. This will stick in my memory forever! As far as a recipe goes, I am going to try and recreate this gorgeous dish and serve it as part of Cretan long table evening at the Tennis Pavilion in North Berwick.
